Quick history of a great cocktail

The name “piña colada” is a compression of two Spanish words, “piña” for pineapple and “colada” for drained, since fresh pressed pineapple was used in the original recipe from South America. While the myth goes that the piña colada was invented in the 19th century by a Puerto Rican pirate wanting to entertain his demoralized crew, most historians place its invention in the 20th century, around the 1950s. Like several cocktail hour classics, many claim authorship, from the Caribe Hilton Hotel to La Barrachina bar, both in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Fun fact: the piña colada is so closely associated with vacationing in the sun that it inspired the “Escape” or “The Piña Colada Song”, a worldwide chart-topping hit from the 70s penned by Anglo-American composer Rupert Holmes.
